January 2013

Compass Point

Dear Scouter,
We hope everyone had a wonderful school break and New Years. The district still has a number of activities planned for the next few months, district pinewood derby, Webelos Woods, district dinner, and Cub Camp just to name a few.

Regards, North Star District

2013 District Dinner

The North Star District Dinner is coming up on January 25, 2013.  At the district dinner we recognize outstanding leaders in our district as well as our Eagle Scouts from 2012.

Information to register for the dinner is online here.  The registration deadline is Saturday, January 19.  Hope to see you there!

Although nominations for the District Award of Merit, Akela and Polaris Awards have come to a close, we have decided to extend the deadline for the Northern Lights (unit award) through this Sunday, January 13 at 6pm.   The award form is found on the website under the advancement tab.

More information

Does Your Unit Have A Trained Top Leader?

While we have until 2015 to answer YES for all of our units, we need to be able to say that for over 70% of them by the end of 2013.

To help do this, a list of Trained / Not Trained Top Unit Leaders (along with our percentage to our  ultimate goal of 100%) will appear in the North Star District Newsletter starting in February.  Remember, to be a "Trained Leader", an adult volunteer needs to have successfully completed all the training as proscribed by National.  If you are not sure that you are a Trained Top Unit Leader, a list of the required training can be found here.  Members of the North Star District Training Staff will be continually going through our training records (and possibly making some calls or sending e-mails) to make sure that all of our Top Unit Leaders ... i.e. Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Crew Advisors and Varsity Coaches ... have all of the required training.

Also, remember that each leadership position has a leader-specific training course associated with it and the Trained patch earned applies only to the position for which it was earned. If a leader attends all training for a Tiger Cub den leader and then transitions the next year to a Cub Scout den leader role, the leader must attend the training specific to Cub Scout den leaders to be considered trained for that position. Some of those required courses are the same - they do not need to be retaken unless, like is possible with Youth Protection Training, the training certification has expired. When signing up for a leader specific course, inquire about only attending the necessary part if you have already earned your Trained patch for a previously held position.

OA News

An Order of the Arrow unit election information session will be conducted at the next district roundtable on January 10, 2013. All of your questions about Order of the Arrow unit elections will be answered. You will learn what information the Order of the Arrow needs from your unit in order to facilitate your OA unit election. Order of the Arrow unit elections are being conducted through March 31. Reserve your OA unit election date now. Send election date requests to the associate chapter Adviser for Elections or to the chapter Adviser .
Order of the Arrow dues are due.  If you were inducted into the Order of the Arrow before November of 2012 your membership in the Order of the Arrow has expired.  Please go to www.mikanakawa.org to pay your dues.  If you renew your dues before March 31 you will receive a Circle Ten Council Centennial commemorative OA flap patch as a thank you gift.

Boy Scout Roundtable

Richard Johnson, Dallas Fly Fishing Club, will present Fly Fishing merit badge and offer you information so your Troop may schedule a program.  Amir Rupshi, will share his 2012 experience at the BSA High Adventure Sea Base in Florida.  Amir 's experience will open the door for your troop's potential Florida adventure.  Ed Bareis and Jackie Charrier, North District's Order of the Arrow lodge Advisors, will bring you up to speed for your Troop's 2013 OA elections.  January and February are the RECHARTER months for most troops.  Jack Helmbrecht, our District Commissioner, will be available to answer your questions.

Cub Scout Roundtable

Cub Scout roundtable is moving back to our original meeting date and location starting this month.  For the rest of this term (except for May when we have the Circle Ten Program Preview) Cub Scout roundtable will be held on the second Tuesday of the month and at First Christian Church on the corner of Walnut Street and Josey Lane in Carrollton.  We hope to see you there!
